About Alejandro
Alejandro Gutiérrez Dávila, from Monterrey, Nuevo León, graduated from the Industrial Design program at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in 2007. His lifelong passion for cooking, especially grilling, led him to co-found the first national barbecue championship in Mexico in 2012 with his wife Gabriela Garza, attracting 700 attendees and 13 competing teams.
In 2013, Alejandro established the SMP (Mexican Society of Grillers), aimed at promoting and celebrating Mexican grilling traditions. The organization has grown to be the largest of its kind in Latin America, with 13 chapters and over 150 grilling courses monthly. SMP hosts the Grill Master H-E-B championship in Monterrey, which draws 38,000+ attendees featuring 100+ competing teams.
Alejandro has developed a product line with 200 items and numerous recipe books available at over 3,000 retail stores. His recipe book, “El Fuego Nos Une Volume 5,” won second place in the “BBQ Book of the Year 2020.” Recently, he was awarded the 2024 TuriLeón Award in Gastronomic and Cultural Tourism by the Secretary of Tourism of Nuevo León. He has also appeared in Netflix’s Taco Chronicles and CNN’s Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico series.
He has participated in prestigious barbecue competitions, including representing Mexico in the 2021 World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in Memphis where he placed second in the Shoulder category and eighth overall. Beyond grilling, Alejandro serves on the Techo council, a youth-led non-profit organization that works to create system-changing solutions to end poverty, volunteers as a firefighter, and consults for private sector companies.
