Say hello to “Blooming Melodies” and Jennifer Hughes
Basking in the shade near Boiler House and Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery lies a painted cow. Meet Blooming Melodies by San Antonio artist Jennifer Hughes. Inspired by (and painted on) the Battle of Flowers parade day during Fiesta in May, this life-sized heifer is decorated in pinks, purples, yellows, and magentas. It features South Texas iconography like a blooming cactus, native plants, and a guitar that doubles as a saddle.
The sculpture is part of CowParade’s (the world’s largest public art initiative) COW-mmunity painting day, where visitors and locals teamed up to paint parts of Blooming Melodies. 2025’s Battle of Flowers parade theme was “Melodies in Bloom,” and Jen Hughes’ cow follows that motif with music iconography being featured across its design.
“I’m an artist, and my husband is a musician, and I wanted to incorporate that into the design. If you view Blooming Melodies from the side, you’ll see what looks like a saddle, but from the top, it’s actually a guitar. Look a little closer, and you’ll find the strings on the guitar are detached. I wanted to say that melodies can be broken but can still be beautiful.”
Jen is a full-time artist and muralist, so when painting on a three-dimensional object, it offered a new creative challenge that she was excited to take on. She’s been visiting the neighborhood since the Pearl Markets were near La Gloria and loves bringing her family to experience Pearl. The CowParade sculpture serves as a full-circle moment for the artist. From making visits to Pearl in its early days to having Blooming Melodies painted on campus and installed, having her artwork inside the neighborhood is a source of pride.
“My passion as an artist is to bring joy to others. I love painting with bright colors because they uplift me, and over the years, I’ve noticed a community that is drawn to them as well. I feel like at times life can get so heavy, and experiencing art can lift the spirit and add beauty.”
